• FydeOS VM for VMWare 是我们针对 VMWare 虚拟机客户端专门适配的 FydeOS 虚拟机镜像文件。使用该发行版可以以最简便的体验方式体验 FydeOS，只需要下载最新的 FydeOS VM for VMWare 客户端的镜像文件，按照指南导入即可在安装有 VMware 客户端的所有主流操作系统上体验 FydeOS 的大部分功能。值得注意的是，由于 FydeOS 及其子系统设计的特殊性，FydeOS VM 里的部分功能是受到限制或者无法使用的，详情请认真阅读 FydeOS VM 的发布通知。

Currently we have the following three main FydeOS releases. According to different scenarios, you can choose the release download experience that suits you best:

• FydeOS for PC is the most universal FydeOS release, intended to adapt to most PC devices with Intel CPU and Intel integrated graphics. • FydeOS for You is our customized version for some designated devices. It has better adaptability and supports some device-specific functions. • FydeOS VM for VMWare is our FydeOS virtual machine image file specially adapted for the VMWare virtual machine client. Use this release to experience FydeOS in the easiest way to experience, just download the latest image file of the FydeOS VM for VMWare client, follow the guide Import can experience most of the functions of FydeOS on all mainstream operating systems with VMware client installed. It is worth noting that due to the special design of FydeOS and its subsystems, some functions in FydeOS VM are restricted or unavailable. At the same time, we also open sourced some of the core technologies for making FydeOS, and maintained Chromium OS that can run on embedded devices and single-board computer development kits, including:

Compared with other more traditional Linux distributions, FydeOS has special requirements for graphics drivers. This means that FydeOS can only run on some PC devices that meet the requirements.

Currently, FydeOS for PC can only be started on PC devices using Intel x86 architecture processors. If you want to use the additional functions of the Android subsystem and the Linux subsystem, the device must have the fourth generation or later Intel graphics chip.

FydeOS (and its upstream project Chromium OS) is different from other traditional Linux distributions. It is highly optimized and integrated into the browser’s graphics stack (including the underlying graphics driver, hardware acceleration module, and user-mode window manager module) for proprietary Technology, while providing higher performance and user experience for FydeOS, it also limits the compatibility of hardware.

FydeOS is committed to adapting and compatible with more hardware devices and external devices. The Google Play Store requires official Google authorization for distribution. The applications distributed through the Google Play Store usually rely on Google’s service framework. FydeOS currently presets “FydeOS App Store” and “Coolapk” (Android Subsystem Only) in the system, where you can get tens of thousands of extensions, Chrome apps, and Android apps.

If you have a certain hands-on ability and the need to use the Google version of Android services, you can obtain the relevant configuration program in the “FydeOS App Store” to configure it to meet your needs through the open source project “Open GApps”. It should be noted that this feature is currently in the testing phase and cannot guarantee usability.

The Android subsystem has an independent set of “End User Agreement”, please read it carefully. You can only activate and enable the Android subsystem by clicking “Confirm Start” after checking the consent.

After the Android subsystem is successfully activated, the setting interface of the Android subsystem will open immediately. The “Android Settings” program is the entrance to the Android Settings interface.

At present, FydeOS presets “Coolapk” as the default Android application store. You can download and install the applications you need. Of course, you can also download the apk file by yourself, double-click to install the apk program by “sideloading”, or install an Android market program you like and install new Android software through the market program.

我们在 FydeOS 上测试了由 Codeweavers 提供的 CrossOver Chrome OS，可以在 FydeOS 上运行一部分常用的 Windows 软件。

值得注意的是，CrossOver Chrome OS 需要运行在 FydeOS 的 Linux 子系统下。该软件提供 14 天的免费试用期，目前的售价是 $39.95。

In the FydeOS for PC version, you can use the username chronos to log in to the system’s command line (shell) environment. The account does not set a password by default. In addition, the account can also use the sudo command to escalate rights.

To receive updates for your FydeOS for PC installation, the “Automatically keep my FydeOS up to date” switch under Settings needs to be turned on.

There are 2 types of updates for FydeOS for PC:

• Maintenance updates within the same milestone version, e.g. from FydeOS for PC v12.0 to v12.1. For this kind of updates, it will be delivered Over-the-Air. Your FydeOS will automatically check for updates like these and will perform the necessary actions to download and apply the patches. Once everything is done, you will be prompted to reboot your FydeOS to the latest version - you can do this at any time to your convenience.
• Milestone updates from one major release to another, e.g. from FydeOS for PC v11.4 to v12.0. With FydeOS for PC, this kind of updates usually include Linux kernel version changes as well as modifications for other system libraries. Because we don’t know the exact make and model of your PC and test them before releasing, in the unlikely event, things may break for you. Therefore we have decided to hold-off all FydeOS for PC to automatically apply these updates. You have 2 options:
  • You can download a new copy of the latest FydeOS for PC image and perform the installation to your PC once again. You can also verify if all features that had worked previously will still work in the new release. However, your previous installed apps and your personal data will be lost.
  • We will also be providing the option for you to update your FydeOS for PC to the next major release version Over-the-Air whilst preserving your installed apps and personal data, at a small one-time fee. However, for the exact same reason as mentioned above, it’s recommended that you verify the working order of the new release on your device before proceeding.

The following is a quick FAQ for the update situation aiming to explain the rationale behind.

It’s pretty much the same reason as of why we launch the FydeOS subscription service for FydeOS for You releases. We hope to bring you the best FydeOS experience; This means that we are not interested in inserting advertisements, reselling your privacy, and other inelegant monetisation methods. At the same time, we believe that “donation” is a less controllable and somewhat unfair monetisation method. For the FydeOS update scenario, paying an one-time fee in exchange for the value-added services is undoubtedly the most direct and fair way.

Q: How much will I have to pay?

Q: What am I actually paying for?

You are mostly paying for the CDN traffic to transmit around 2GB data from our update server to your local machine, as well as the upkeep and maintenance of our support cloud services that cannot be replaced by Google’s offering.

Q: What if I don’t want to pay but I still want to use FydeOS for PC?

You don’t have to pay. You can keep using the current version by turning the “Automatically keep my FydeOS up to date” off. Or you can install the new version of FydeOS manually to your PC just like you did earlier.

Q: Will I have to pay again for each major release in the future if I want to update it over-the-air?

Yes.

Q: Can I get a refund if I don’t like the update and wish to rollback to previous version?

No. You’ve already consumed the traffic.

Q: What happens if the update breaks my machine?

Sorry for that. It’s likely that your machine is too old and it’s somewhat not compatible with the update. You can rollback to the previous version(by selecting the alternative boot entry from the grub menu). To avoid awkwardness like this, it’s recommended that you verify the working order of the new major release on your PC by booting it on a USB device before you update it via OTA.

The Trusted Platform Module(TPM) is usually a chip inside a computer to provide a root of trust for the computer. In order to ensure overall security, many features of FydeOS rely on the functions provided by a TPM chip. There are many different TPM chips and corresponding specifications on the market. Sometimes due to incompatibility, FydeOS for PC cannot initialise the TPM on your device, which will cause the following features to be unavailable:

• <chrome://flags> shows blank
• Unable to import custom certificate to Chromium browser
• “About FydeOS” - “Additional details” - “Change channel” button is greyed out

If you experience the above issues, you can enable this “Bypass TPM checks” as a workaround to make your FydeOS a little bit more permissive and those features should then work.
